I have been a Locomotive Engineer for 30 Years. I loved my job running trains and working the road. I enjoyed the people that I worked with. I also enjoyed seeing rail fans along the way.
Unfortunately, I can no longer work as an Engineer, account of an on the job injury. It will not allow me to preform my duties as I had in the past. I will sorely miss my Engineers career and the people that I worked with. I served 18 years as a Union rep for the Engineers and Fireman. And for the most part, I enjoyed that also.
I am currently on disability, and am trying to cope with that as well.
If you are an Engineer or Wanting to be or are a New Engineer, do yourself a favor. Support your Union whole heartedly, they are the only protection you have from railroad management. And do your best to stay safe. It's a dangerous place to work. And the Railroad management don't give a crap about you and are NOT your friends, no matter what they say.
When I was a Local Chairman for the Unions, I tried to tell the guys that I worked with, just that. You would be surprised how many didn't listen, till they got stung. All you can do is make the best of it. Earn a good living and stay safe.

I was a Locomotive Engineer with Conrail. I have been on the railroad for 30 years.
I ran in a freight pool, better known as the Chain Gang, between Elkhart, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois.
Hitting cars, trucks and people at crossings is not fun. I've been there and done that.
